South Carolina’s capital is Columbia. It is an excellent location for visiting museums such as the Columbia Museum of Art and the South Carolina Military Museum. Pay a visit to the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden. While these places do charge admission, there are plenty of free things to do in Columbia that will allow you to enjoy your time without breaking the bank.

Columbia has a diverse range of parks and urban green spaces. I’m putting together this list of free things to do in Columbia so that families can visit the area and enjoy some of the most beautiful spots the city has to offer.
Riverfront Park
Riverfront Park first opened its doors in 1983. It was designed around the city’s oldest original waterworks and hydroelectric plant, the state’s oldest and still operational.
Riverfront Park, which covers approximately 167 acres, is a popular location for walking and jogging trails. The trails are about two and a half miles long and provide beautiful views of the park and river.
Every year, the park hosts events such as Riverfest, which is held at the brick amphitheater. Other smaller concerts are held there throughout the year.
Finlay Park | Things to do in Columbia SC
FinlayPark is one of the state’s most well-known parks. It is well-known for hosting festivals, political rallies, and events ranging from the mundane to the sublime, such as Easter Sunrise services.
The 18-acre park has become a focal point in the downtown area. It frequently hosts events such as Kids Day and Summer concerts. The park is across the street from the Governor’s Mansion and has one of the best views of downtown.
Visit the bronze statue of Columbia’s late mayor, Kirkman Finlay, sitting on a bench, which was unveiled in April 2000.
Lake Murray
Lake Murray is one of Columbia’s crown jewels. It has the best views in the neighborhood. Take a walk or ride your bike along the Lake Murray dam. The most vibrant colours reflecting off the water can be seen at sunrise or sunset. The park is $3 to enter, but there is free parking on the Lexington side.
Sally Salamander Walking Tour
Columbia’s ambassador is Sally Salamander. Sally Salamander is a downtown Columbia walking tour. It entails visiting numbered bronze statues, each of which contains Sally Salamander. Get a map and head to the Columbia SC Visitors Center for the first stop on the tour.
State House
Monday through Friday, the State House offers free guided and self-guided tours. Learn about the history of the State House. Many works of art, including portraits and monuments, can be found on the grounds of the Capital Complex, including the State House.
